Advocates
for Youth HIV/STD Education Department
Advocates for Youth's involvement in HIV/STD prevention and AIDS
awareness education began in 1986, when it became apparent that no national organization
was addressing the very real threat of AIDS to the nation's adolescent population. Because
HIV prevention education was a logical extension of its work in pregnancy prevention, Advocates
for Youth created the National Adolescent AIDS and HIV Prevention Initiative.
Through two cooperative agreements with the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC), Advocates for Youth has developed and
implemented a comprehensive adolescent HIV/STD prevention education program. The
initiative includes: training/technical assistance for youth peer educators and youth
serving professionals regarding model program design, implementation, evaluation and
replication; and publication of new resource materials, including facts sheets,
briefing books and resources for educators.
AEGIS
AEGIS is a comprehensive knowledge base which includes AIDS daily news
summaries; reprints from select national and metropolitan newspapers; a database search
engine linked to the National Library of Medicine; select conference summaries &
conference calendars; "how-to" papers written for persons newly diagnosed or
living with HIV infection and comprehensive links to HIV-related sites.
AIDSInfo
The HIV/AIDS Clinical Trials Information Service (ACTIS) and its
sister service, the HIV/AIDS Treatment Information Service (ATIS), have
merged into a single website called
www.AIDSinfo.nih.gov. The
AIDSinfo project now includes all of the services already available from
ACTIS and ATIS, as well as added quick and easy access to wide-ranging
Federal resources on HIV/AIDS clinical research, HIV treatment and
prevention and medical practice guidelines for health care providers and
consumers.
The AIDSinfo website, located at

designed for full accessibility, ensuring easy search and navigation.
The website presents federally approved information on HIV/AIDS

AIDS Walk Detroit -
A Steppin' Out Event
Steppin' Out will hold the ninth annual AIDS Walk Detroit on Sunday, September 19, 1999
with a fundraising goal of $250,000. We expect in excess of ten thousand walkers, blade's,
runners, and supporters for a day filled with entertainment and activities.
American Foundation for AIDS Research (AMFAR)
The American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR) launched an online version of its
comprehensive directory of HIV treatments. Patients can look up the absolute latest on
antiviral drugs, immune boosters, and drugs to fight opportunistic infections. The
language is sometimes heavy on medical and scientific lingo but generally very useful. New
to the directory this year is a section in clear-to-understand language on how to
understand laboratory test results.
American Red Cross - HIV/AIDS
The Red Cross, working in partnership with the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, educates people on how to stop the transmission of HIV, encourages
people to respond in informed ways to people who have HIV, and helps people apply the
facts about HIV to their own behavior. These goals are accomplished through their
educational programs.
American Social Health Association
Founded in 1914, the American Social Health Association is a nonprofit
organization dedicated to stopping sexually transmitted diseases and their harmful
consequences to individuals, families and communities. To increase public awareness
about STD's, ASHA publishes a variety of educational materials,
distributing over 2.5 million publications each year. ASHA provides
direct patient support through the Herpes Resource Center/National Herpes Hotline and the
HPV Support Program, which publish quarterly journals and coordinate a network of over 100
local support groups. To raise public awareness of the disproportionate impact that STD's
have on women, ASHA operates the Women's Health program.

Information Resource

CDC - National Prevention Information
Network
The CDC National Prevention Information Network (NPIN) provides
information about HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and

care, research, and support services. All of NPIN's services are designed to
facilitate the sharing of information about education, prevention, published
materials, and research findings and news about HIV/AIDS-, STD-, and TB-related
trends.
Center for AIDS Prevention Studies
The Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) at the
University of California San Francisco is committed to maintaining a focus on prevention
of HIV disease, using the expertise of multiple disciplines, and an applied and
community-based perspective within a university setting.
Coalition for Positive Sexualty
The Coalition for Positive Sexuality (CPS) is a grassroots direct-action
volunteer group formed in the spring of 1992 by high school students and member
of the AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power (ACT UP), Queer Nation (QN), Emergency
Clinic Defense Coalition (ECDC), and No More Nice Girls. We came together to
respond to the health crisis among Chicago teenagers. The Chicago Department of
Health and the Chicago Public Schools fail to teach students about sexuality and
safe sex because of bad educational policies, a general silence around sexuality
and sexual practices, and systematic discrimination against people on the basis
of race, class, gender, sexuality, and age.
The Commission on Mental and
Physical Disability Law
The Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law has been
fulfilling the ABA's commitment to justice and the rule of law for persons with mental and
physical disabilities since 1973. Besides a wide variety of publications, for the last
nineteen years the Commission has been publishing the Mental and Physical Disability
Law Reporter , the nation's longest running and most comprehensive source of
disability law.
Community Provider AIDS Training
The Community Provider AIDS Training Project (CPAT) is a resource for health care
providers caring for people with HIV. CPAT is funded by the
Health Resources and Services
Administration (HRSA), the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. All
CPAT services are free and for health care providers only.
Council of Chief State School Officers Resource Center
The HIV/School Health Project assists state education agencies in providing effective
HIV/AIDS education as part of a coordinated approach to school health. Current
activities include producing and disseminating materials that chief state school officers,
state health officials, their staffs, and other interested colleagues can use to engage
the public concerning the importance of taking a coordinated approach to school health;
assisting state education agencies to strengthen their capacity to support school-linked
approaches to preventing teen pregnancy; producing a document about making sure that
effective HIV prevention programs are targeted to young people who are disproportionately
at risk for contracting HIV; providing chief state school officers with research-based
materials related to HIV education, teen pregnancy, and school health; publishing guidance
on incorporating health-related indicators into education accountability systems;
producing the Directory of Coordinated School Health Program Staff in State
Education Agencies.
These activities are funded through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Adolescent and School Health. The
Council also operates the Comprehensive Health Education Network (CHEN),
a listserv that connects state education agency staff and colleagues around the country
who work on school health issues.

Critical Path AIDS Project was founded by persons with AIDS (PWA's) to provide
treatment, resource, and prevention information in wide-ranging levels of detail--for

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is the leading U.S.
national non-profit organization dedicated to identifying, funding and conducting basic

Gay Men's Health Crisis
Gay Men's Health Crisis, founded by volunteers in 1981, is the oldest

HRSA's HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB)
The HIV/AIDS Bureau of the Health Resources and Services
Administration (HRSA), administers the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS
Resources Emergency (CARE) Act. The CARE Act was signed into law On August 18, 1990 to
improve the quality and availability of care for people with HIV/AIDS and their families.
Amended and re-authorized in May 1996, the Act is named after the Indiana teenager, Ryan
White, who became an active public educator on HIV/AIDS after he contracted the disease.
He died the same year the legislation was passed.
Human Rights Campaign
The Human Rights Campaign, the largest national lesbian and gay

Metro TeenAIDS (E-mail Only)
Metro TeenAIDS (in DC) offers HIV education and prevention services

Michigan Protection and Advocacy Service
Michigan Protection and Advocacy Service, Inc. (MPAS) is a private, non-profit
organization designated by the Governor to protect and promote the human and legal rights
of people with disabilities in Michigan through the provision of information and advocacy.
In providing services, MPAS strives to advance the dignity, equality, self-determination
and expressed choices of individuals.
The HIV/AIDS Advocacy Program (HAAP) provides legal advocacy services to people living
with HIV and AIDS in Michigan. Services include information and referral, direct advocacy,
legal representation, training and attorney referral as well as publications and written
materials to assist people with wills and estate planning, housing rights, social security
benefits and other legal rights issues.
Midwest AIDS Prevention Project
The Midwest AIDS Prevention Project (MAPP) is one of Michigan's largest and oldest
non-profit, community-based organizations whose mission is the prevention of HIV
transmission through AIDS education and safer sex information. Working closely with the
Michigan Department of Community Health, city and county health departments,
community-based organizations and health care professionals, MAPP has developed innovative
and effective behavior-based workshops, outreach projects and education programs for a
wide variety of targeted populations and locations. Their mission is carried out by
a diverse group of individuals who have worked as staff and volunteers with local, state
and national AIDS organizations for over a decade.

The NAMES Project Foundation: AIDS
Memorial Quilt
In June of 1987, a small group of strangers gathered in a San Francisco storefront to
document the lives they feared history would neglect. Their goal was to create a memorial
for those who had died of AIDS, and to thereby help people understand the devastating
impact of the disease. This meeting of devoted friends and lovers served as the foundation
of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt.
Today, 11 years later, the Quilt is a powerful visual reminder of the AIDS pandemic.
Over 41,000 individual 3-by-6-foot memorial panels -- each one commemorating the life of
someone who has died of AIDS -- have been sewn together by friends, lovers and family
members. The NAMES Project Foundation coordinates displays of portions of
the Quilt worldwide.
Narcotics Anonymous of Michigan
Narcotics Anonymous is about helping people help themselves. They are a
non-profit organization comprised of people who suffer from the disease of
addiction. Whether you are an addict suffering from addiction or you think you
may have a problem, you can find help from NA. There is no requirement for
membership other than the individual's choice to become one. There are no fees
required to join.
National AIDS Fund
The National AIDS Fund is the leading business and pioneering
philanthropic response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Based in Washington, DC, the Fund
represents more than 1,500 companies, foundations, community groups and citizens whose
contributions have generated more than $70 million over the past decade to combat the AIDS
epidemic in communities across the country.
National AIDS Treatment Information Project
The National AIDS Treatment Information Project was established in 1994 with funding by
the Kaiser Family Foundation. Its mission is to provide up-to-date and understandable
clinical information for HIV-infected persons and their caregivers. In recent years, NATIP
has provided treatment information to over 2400 medical clinics and AIDS service
organizations across the country. The project distributes educational materials in a
variety of ways. These include direct mailings to AIDS clinics and service organizations,
and posting on the Internet at the Kaiser Family Foundation through an automated
facsimile-on-demand system in response to specific telephone inquiries.
National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS
Directors
The National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD)
is dedicated to reducing the incidence of HIV infection in the United States and
territories, providing comprehensive, compassionate, and quality care to all persons
living with AIDS/HIV, and the development of responsible and compassionate public
policies. NASTAD provides national leadership to achieve these goals and
to educate about and advocate for the necessary federal funding to achieve them and to
promote communication between state and local health departments and AIDS/HIV prevention
and care programs. NASTAD supports and encourages the use of applied
scientific knowledge and input from affected communities to guide the development of
effective policies and programs. NASTAD works collaboratively with its
members and others concerned about HIV infection to make decisions and reach common goals
in pursuit of this mission.
National Association of Persons With AIDS (NAPWA)
NAPWA believes that every individual with HIV deserves to be treated
with respect and compassion and to have access to the best health care possible. This web
site is offered and maintained based on their belief that an educated community is an
empowered community.
National Coalition of Hispanic Health and
Human Services Organizations
In 1993, COSSMHO was funded by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) for a 5-year project to provide training and
technical assistance to agencies serving Hispanics at high risk for HIV infection and
sexually transmitted diseases (STD's). COSSMHO's Community HIV/AIDS
Technical Assistance Network (CHATAN) has established a collaborative working
relationship with CBOs across the country to serve as lead agencies in the implementation
of the project. The lead agencies are located in: Arizona, California, District of
Colombia, New Mexico, New York, Puerto Rico, and Texas. Each of the seven lead agencies
also collaborate with an additional 10-12 organizations--including state and local health
departments--providing services to Hispanics.
NEA Health Information Network
The National Education Association Health Information Network's
comprehensive School Health Program was launched with the goal of development of guidance
documents to assist NEA members and others in the development and
implementation of programs addressing HIV and comprehensive school health. The primary
focus in this development is working with pilot sites in the development of programs which
address their needs. The NEA HIN HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention
Project for School Employees is striving to equip public school employees with information

NMAC is a national AIDS organization which develops and promotes
programs and services for community-based organizations serving people of color affected

National Pediatric & Family HIV Resource
Center (NPHRC)
The National Pediatric & Family HIV Resource Center is a
non-profit organization that serves professionals who care for children, adolescents and
families with HIV infection and AIDS. Founded in 1990, the Center offers education,
consultation, technical assistance, and training for health and social service
professionals.
North American Syringe Exchange Network
Dedicated to the creation, expansion and continued existence of syringe exchange
programs as a proven method of stopping the transmission of blood borne pathogens,
especially HIV, in the injecting drug using community.

Oakland Cannabis Buyers' Cooperative
The goal of the Oakland Cannabis Buyers' Cooperative (OCBC) is to provide seriously ill
patients with a safe and reliable source of medical cannabis information and patient
support. Our cooperative is open to all patients with a verifiable letter of
recommendation for medical cannabis, used to alleviate or terminate the effects of their
illnesses. The OCBC is currently unable to dispense medical cannabis due to federal court
order, this ruling is currently under appeal and we will post updates as they become
available.
Rites of Passage
Rites of Passage is a non-profit agency which was founded in 1988 to offer
services to people with a terminal illness and provide education and training on AIDS and
on death and dying. Their philosophy and work has been greatly influenced by Elisabeth
Kubler-Ross who taught that "In our most anguished moments may reside the greatest of
gifts - not only for ourselves but for the world." They have therefore looked upon
their patients as teachers and attempted to approach the difficult passages in life as
opportunities to learn and grow spiritually. Their unique contribution has been in their
use of art, video, and photography. Through these mediums they have been able to
communicate their own vision and the teachings and wisdom of their patients to a worldwide
audience.
San Francisco AIDS Foundation
The San Francisco AIDS Foundation was founded in 1982 in San Francisco's Castro
district as an emergency response to a quickly emerging health crisis. Its primary purpose
was simply to assemble and disseminate critical information to gay men who were being
diagnosed with a rare and frightening cancer.
As the health crisis grew to epidemic proportions and spread into new
populations, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation correspondingly grew and responded to new
challenges. Building upon its original mission to educate, the AIDS Foundation added
comprehensive services for
people living with HIV disease and AIDS and an aggressive public policy component to compel federal and state
governments to address the growing epidemic.

Whitman-Walker Clinic
Since our founding in 1973, Whitman-Walker Clinic has provided
culturally sensitive, compassionate health care and supportive services to gay men,
lesbians, bisexuals and transgender individuals in the Washington, DC area. Since 1983, we
have worked to meet the needs of people living with or impacted by HIV and AIDS. Today, we
are the primary community-based provider of HIV and AIDS services in the Washington area.
